July 12, 2010

I woke up around 1:00 am with a pain in my stomach. I thought it was indigestion but found out quickly that it was the start of labor. I tried to get some sleep but was unable to find a comfy spot to rest. I told Darren to go to sleep and I would let him know if he needed to get up.  When he woke up that morning I told him that the baby is likely coming today. So, he headed off to work to drop off the phone and took the day off. When he got back around 8:30am, I was still doing okay. He thought this would be a good time to get the car seat in the car. I was able to nap on the couch for a couple of minutes at a time between contractions. Around 11:00 am they were coming between 5 & 6 minutes apart and they were getting more intense. We headed to the hospital.

We got checked in and the nurses checked me. I was 3cm. They were initially going to send me back home at this time but then they saw how intense the contractions were.  Since I was getting severe pain in my hips and back, they recommended me to walk around. Time passed,  they let me in the shower and the hot water helped. After I was finished I laid on the bed and they gave me laughing gas (I forget the medical term). It helped me to breath.  Poor Darren was feeling light headed from all the breathing he was doing.

Around 2:45pm, they checked me again. It was time. At 3:16pm, Maria was born. She was 5 pounds 5 ounces and 18 inches long. (hospitals use metric measurements so they had to convert for us).

I was told by the nurse that I had a really easy labor and I was a baby making machine. To bad I'm not interested in having a dozen babies ;).

Our first visitors were Byron, Andrea and 4 day old Rylan. Mom and Dad showed up later that evening.
